Stretch out on your back and make friends with the moon,
stars, constellations, planet Mars, and the zodiac.
Learn how Hawaiians navigate by the stars
and how to tell time by the sky.
Look through a telescope at lava flows on our moon,
stars being born and stars dying.
Meet Jan. 22 at 7 pm at the end of Hauole Street in Maalaea. (Directions below.) $10 donation. $5 for kids under 16. Bring a flashlight and a blanket to lie down on. Dress warmly, as Maalaea can be windy. Bring mosquito repellent if it's not windy. No reservations - first come, first served.
Harriet, an international award winning astronomy writer, has been teaching astronomy since 1980. Since 1990 she has been presenting regular stargazing programs for tourists at Maui resort hotels. She is the astronomer to the Maui Film Festival and has been teaching "Making Friends With the Night Sky" classes in the Vitec program at Maui Community College since 1992.
Hauole Street in Maalaea has condos on the right, scrub brush on the left, and Haycraft Park at the end. (As you exit the Haleakala side of the Maui Ocean Center parking lot, face Haleakala and you'll see Hauole Street in front of you. On the right hand corner is a sign for the Waterfront Restaurant.) Drive to the end of this short cul-de-sac and park ON THE STREET--NOT in the Haycraft Park parking lot, since the county locks the lot at night and doesn't open it until morning. We'll meet in Haycraft Park and then walk together about 100 yards along the beach to a nice, dark spot behind the dunes where Harriet has been teaching for years. This spot can be hard to find if you don't arrive on time and have to look for it by yourself.
