We're leaning toward our Sun during
part of our yearly journey:
summer.
We're leaning away from our Sun during the
opposite part of our journey:
winter.
On December 21 we in the northern hemisphere are tilted farther
into our Earth's shadow than at any other time of year;
our nights are as long as they possibly can be.
This is our "winter solstice."
This date is a turning point in our journey around
--and our relationship with--
the star that warms us and gives us light.
At this turning point our light begins returning
--our days begin growing longer--
but ever so slightly at first.
